Reputable firms use established cost of material and labor data to calculate the price of your project. The contractor who quotes a price for an extensive kitchen remodeling job at the first meeting is using the “guess method” of estimating. This contractor is likely quoting a price that is too high or too low in comparison to the actual cost of your project. No problem with a price that is low? Remember that the “low-baller” probably runs the rest of its business in the same manner. The service of the low-price guy will be flat in ways other than just his price. Unless you’re willing to accept low quality along with that low price, expect that it will take from one to three business days for a reputable builder to present a written estimate for a major home remodeling project.
